Bünyamin Sürmeli was born in Istanbul in 1975. He graduated from the Department of Meteorological Engineering at the Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Istanbul Technical University, in 2000. Even before graduating, he began to engage in amateur weather forecasting during his student years. Between 1997 and 1998, through phone calls with two radio stations, Sürmeli gained recognition and earned the nickname “The Man Who Smells the Weather.”

While still pursuing his studies, in 1999, he received an offer from CNN TÜRK and embarked on his professional career. Starting from the ground up, he prepared weather forecasts with graphics and his own narration on CNN TÜRK broadcasts for one and a half years. Since 2001, he has been both the editor and the presenter of his program.

He presented the weather forecast on CNN TÜRK for 21 years. Since February 2021, he has continued his television broadcasting career at HABER GLOBAL following an offer.

In addition to weather forecasts and documentary programs on television, since 2001 Sürmeli has served as a meteorology editor at Power FM, and since 2006 has been a contributor to Yacht Turkey magazine.

Sürmeli regularly meets with students at universities and high schools for talks and delivers seminars and training sessions on meteorology, climate, nature, and sustainability to numerous national and international organizations.

In 2023, he founded the online news platform sdgtalking.com, focusing on sustainability and climate change. He works as a journalist at the United Nations Headquarters in New York and also produces content for Haber Global.

Sürmeli, who also works as a voice-over artist, has contributed to various documentaries focusing on environmental and climate change topics in extraordinary geographical regions such as Alaska, Arizona, Kenya-Tanzania, the South Caucasus, and Southern Europe.
He has collaborated with NatGeo and NatGeo Global (UK) on documentary presentations and content production.
